I have understood through years of tutoring experience that there is no 'one-size fits all' approach when it comes to teaching. Each pupil experiences their own challenges in every subject and it's up to the teacher to understand and work through those challenges.

My methodology for exam years (GCSE) involves coming to terms with basic concepts first of all and then solidifying this knowledge with regular exam practice; I use mark schemes to explain concepts so all the content will be covered in a way relevant to the exams.

For younger years we will focus on grasping the basics and follow an 'active recall and spaced repetition' approach. This is because young children are most likely to forget content so regular practice will keep them up to date. Once their understanding has solidified we will move up to the higher level but keep revising past concepts so everything is perfected.

These methods of teaching are what I've learned from tutoring maths and English at Kumon, volunteering at a Saturday school that helps students under their reading age, and private tutoring in GCSE maths and further maths.
