Lessons are tailored to each student - I don't believe one size fits all. However all students do need to cover the same mathematical topics and acquire the appropriate skills.
Lessons usually start with a short warm-up exercise, often called a 'Do Now' in school, followed by detailed coverage of a particular topic. I maintain a separate list for each student of the skills required by the curriculum so it is easy to track progress and see which topics have or have not been covered. If a student wants help with a particular topic (eg factorising quadratics or finding the nth term of an arithmetic, quadratic or geometric sequence) then, of course, I cover that topic. Otherwise I choose what I see as an appropriate next topic depending on where the student is in their studies. So I offer a flexible approach. I provide plenty of handouts including materials I have prepared myself and those I have downloaded - the key thing is not so much the materials but the explanation that goes with them so I am careful to ensure that each topic is understood as well as practised.
I have a range of qualifications - a BSc Hons degree and a BMus Hons degree plus a PGCE in secondary school mathematics and a PhD in music.
I have taught extensively as a private tutor and also worked as a maths teacher in several secondary schools as well as teaching for the Open University as an Associate Lecturer. My background outside teaching is as a software developer using C, C++, Java, PHP, html, css, jquery and various relational databases (SQL Server, Oracle, mySql etc). However, I am now retired and working part time as a private maths tutor. I look forward to working with you on your maths very soon!
