About me

The first thing I do is find out what you're interested in, what you like and dislike, how you like to operate.

I tailor writing exercises and speech writing around your interests, so if you love football, we'll write about that. If you're into Heartstopper, we'll write about that. If you haven't got a clue what to write, we'll write about that.

I tailor writing exercises and speech writing around your interests, so if you love football, we'll write about that. If you're into Heartstopper, we'll write about that. If you haven't got a clue what to write, we'll write about that.

In my experience, most students have huge amounts of talent and untapped imagination - they just have to rid themselves of the fear in order to be able to release it

I can guarantee that you've got great stories inside you and there's more to come from you but you're just not confident about putting the pen on the paper and moving the pen.

That's ok.

If ever you've said the words 'I dunno' when faced with a blank sheet of paper, I can help.

From now on, that pen will keep moving and there will be so much flowing out of you the decision will be what to include and what to leave out, not what to write. If you don't believe me, put me to the test.

My job is to make you more confident and less fearful of English Language (we will look a bit at Literature, but only to show how those great writers do it).

Through one session a week, your attention will improve in English lessons because those classes won't be so scary and daunting, you won't feel left behind as much and you may even be the first person with their hand up.

I'm looking forward to working with you and learning from you.

Cheers, Declan

Can’t recommend Dec highly enough. My daughter has always loved English but sadly her confidence had been eroded at school after a succession of poor cover teachers. Dec tutored my daughter weekly in the lead up to her final GCSE papers. He built a wonderful rapport that enthused, engaged and made learning fun again… a magnificent feat in such a stressful period. She went into her exams with a renewed sense of confidence and afterwards eagerly rang Dec to tell him all about it. Heart warming to see such a transformation. Thank you so much.

Dec helped me immensely with my exam technique within both English Literature and Language. Having struggled with a high turnover of English teachers at school, I felt unprepared and nervous for my GCSES, but with Dec’s engaging and knowledgeable help, I gradually began to understand what questions required of me and became far more confident in my answers. I also came to understand the books I was studying in further depth and I was able to analyse extracts and apply techniques in far more detail than I had been able to previously. My creative writing became more structured with higher level vocabulary and techniques that I had not thought to use before. I am very grateful for all the help and support given to me by Dec.

Our son has ADHD, dyspraxia and dyslexia. Education is a significant challenge for him and his teachers. Prior to working with Declan, his confidence was low. Attainment and discipline were very poor. One of his English teachers told us he would never attain a pass at GCSE. The teachers who get the best out of him are those who take time to build rapport, earn his respect and understand what makes him tick. Declan is one of those teachers. Rather than stick to a rigid system, he has adapted his teaching methods for maximum impact. We are delighted with the results. His school teachers have reported a significant increase in his confidence in English and his attainment. In a recent test, he achieved a grade 6 which is a significant step forward. Whilst he may never be an enthusiastic student of English, he is starting to believe that he can achieve more than he thought possible.
