As an English GCSE tutor, my lessons are structured yet flexible, designed to meet the individual needs of each student. Each session typically begins with a brief warm-up activity or a recap of the prior lesson to revise, consolidate, and revisit prior content. We then move into the core focus of the lesson, which varies depending on the student’s exam board, strengths, and areas for development.
For literature, lessons often involve close reading of key texts, including character analysis, themes, context, and how to respond to exam-style questions. I guide students through how to annotate effectively and structure analytical essays using the PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) technique. For language papers, we focus on developing reading comprehension skills, understanding writer’s methods, and crafting well-structured creative writing responses.
I use a mix of model answers and timed practice to build confidence and exam technique. Feedback is immediate and constructive, helping students to understand what examiners look for and how to improve. Homework can be set (and is encouraged) to reinforce skills, and progress is regularly reviewed.
My lessons are interactive and student-centred, encouraging critical thinking and discussion. I often integrate visual aids, past papers, and resources to support all learning styles. Whether a student is aiming for a pass or striving for top grades, my sessions are tailored to build their skills, confidence, and exam readiness in a supportive and engaging environment.
