First of all, I like to get to really know my students. I like to know what interests them so that I can incorporate it into my lessons. If they are into surfing, I might ask them to write a story about surfing or to write a review on a surfing competition for example. I find that learning is much easier and the students are more enthusiastic when a certain amount of focus is on subjects that genuinely interest them.

Early on, it's important that my lessons take the time to establish what level my students are at and what standard they want to get to. If they have upcoming tests or qualifications to attain I will map out a customized path for each student so that their journey is defined from the start.

After that, we will get to work on various subjects within the 4 sections of language learning - reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

We will focus on developing vocabulary and gaining a full understanding of all tenses and how they are used correctly.

To assist in language learning I use interactive tools such as listening to audio recordings, watching videos, reading from documents and of course, conversation.

I like to start each session with at least 5 minutes of conversation to see what is happening in my students' lives and tell them what is happening in mine. This is a great way to practice both speaking and listening and ease into each lesson.

I will also ask my students to choose a book they are interested in to develop reading skills and there will be homework tasks (mostly writing) to focus on spelling, grammar, and sentence structure. As a published author and creative writer, I always like to develop good flow in writing, not just grammatically correct but writing that sounds good and rolls off the tongue.

Above all else, my lessons are fun, interactive and something both me and my students always look forward to!
