I like to tailor my lessons to specific students needs. For the first lesson I will aim to find out what grasp the student as on the subject already and any areas they are struggling with, both through my own observations and by asking them. I believe it’s very important to have an open dialogue with students to know how best I can help them, and what results they want from our sessions.
In general I like to take a one step at a time approach and get one thing right before moving on to the next. Whether this means spending one lesson on one specific issue or blasting through several. I will also in most cases in the following session begin by recaping what we covered previously, to make sure it’s been retained.
It’s also possible that I may set some activities to be completed between sessions however I will keep these to a minimum as I know students have busy enough lives with studies as it is. I will also make this negotiable and if I a student is honest and tells me they don’t think they will have the time to complete it I will find an alternative.
As for content of lessons, I believe learning styles are very important so as with most things I prefer to tailor to what works for the student best. But in general lessons are likely to compromise of going over practise exam questions, reading texts, and breaking things down into manageable easy to learn chunks.
