Cian Rowan

Hello! My name is Cian, and I am a native English speaker from the Republic of Ireland. I am a certified TEFL instructor, trained to teach English to people who may have varied levels of competency with the language. Though it sounds strange, I conduct all my classes through English, as this is without a doubt the best way to pick up a language. Even a totally alien language can be taught through the medium of gesture, props, facial expression, and tone among other things.

When I am starting out with a new student, I use an approach which prioritizes the needs of that individual. I spend a little time getting to know the needs of the new student, figuring out why they are learning English and what their personal goals are with the language. Once I have this information in mind, I will be able to construct lessons which target the student's goals, plus whatever else would be helpful to them. I prefer this approach because it lets the student have agency in how their lessons are conducted, which helps to motivate learners.

When it comes to the format of my lessons, I am primarily an online teacher as I am on the move quite often. I teach through a variety of online platforms, but often Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. I am of course always open to student preferences when it comes to presentation technology.
