I start by getting to know the goals of each student to understand their needs and design my program to help them hone related skills and support their direction. I give energizing exercises and lectures that help students find their particular creative voice encouraging them to think beyond the expected and into what makes their creative lens unique. Along with the development of ideas and creative vision I teach context literacy to help students understand the specific decisions they are making depending on where their work will be experienced (online, in a gallery setting, in a public space, in a book, etc.) The aim is to offer a set of tools and approaches that can help any student develop a robust creative practice.
For those interested in mentorship towards the launch or development of an artistic career I help students find resources and opportunity listings, then work through which opportunities might be a good fit for where they are in their careers in line with their goals and we then work through the application processes (This usually includes the development of a portfolio, an artist statement, a creative CV and letters of interest.) Students ideally walk away knowing how to seek out future opportunities and can move through the application process with confidence.
