Hello there! I'm a Canadian who is currently living in Belfast, and have been teaching English as a second language online for over 2 years now.
I myself speak other languages, so I KNOW how frustrating it can be to learn a new language! It doesn't matter if someone is learning a language or teaching it, patience is the key. Every language in the world is endless, complex, and so different between formal and casual, so learning one is NEVER easy! I believe that if a tutor goes too fast or is unkind, or if the student is confused and doesn't understand, then that is a wasted class.
Learning should be fun but effective, as well as consistent and at the appropriate level. I am always very careful to make sure my students understand what I just taught them before moving on. However, we are a team: whatever you want to practice in regard to English, I am happy to help you with. And if there is a particular aspect of English that you want to improve--- conversation, listening, reading, writing--- I can plan my lessons around it. Usually my first class is spent finding out what you need in regard to your English, and then we go from there. Basically, you are here to learn, but we all learn differently. And I want you to learn with confidence and joy
I grew up in Canada, but I have lived in Northern Ireland, Australia, and Switzerland and have travelled to lots more countries. I grew up speaking Ukrainian with my mother (though I don't speak it anymore, unfortunately), so I have known all of my life how important it is to speak other languages. I now speak conversational French, basic Italian, and am now learning Swedish. I am a trained actor and playwright, and as a result, I know how important communication is. How we get our point across is how we make connections with others, and our world needs more connection. Acting also requires a sense of play and lightness, and so does teaching. I am happy to joke around during our lessons, as long as you are learning and working. If not with me, I still wish you all the best in your English learning journey!
