I am a teacher who has taught a lot of students and I always make sure that my students understands everything I have taught because I do start with the most basic formula before introducing the higher ones.
Also I ask questions on the previous lesson I thought making sure they all understood it before moving forward to start a new topic.
After teaching a particular topic I give a lot of example in order to make sure the children understood the topic not only do I give examples I also give them assessment to do in order to know what they have learnt so far because if I teach with trying to know if they understand then my efforts are in vain.
