My approach to helping a student will be centered around the idea that each student has a specific method of learning that works the best for them. So during the first few sessions we would try a variety of methods and winnow down as we would progress. I would theoretically identify the student's personal strengths, weaknesses, preferences, and personal goals. Example methods I would use could be using my own visual aids, step-by-step explanations, practice questions, or just general discussion.

Once I have a greater understanding of the student's mindset, I can make my own customised resources to support their learning. These may include, summary sheets, diagrams, charts, flashcards or even slideshows. I would also encourage my students to do the same, as the way I learnt best during my years of studying was through getting creative, and finding any way to commit the content to memory. The end goal would be to have my students have an own toolkit of revision strategies they would be comfortable following, regardless of the topic they would be focusing on.

Ideally, my sessions would be structured but also flexible. In my experience it would be helpful to have an idea of what goals should be accomplished by the end of the session, in order to keep a steady pace to best tackle any deadlines, however I would always like to leave room to revisit any topics or to ask further questions if needed. Building confidence is just as important as building knowledge, so it's vital that the student feels like they have the necessary support to achieve this.

I'd also mention that although I would focus on helping the student understand any grey areas of the syllabus, I would place equal importance of teaching students to answer exam questions. Part of my strength as a student was in exam practice, knowing exactly what each question is asking and exactly how to answer it properly. A student may have all the answers with them but apply them in the wrong areas, and this is something I'd be skilled in tackling.

Ultimately, my goal as a tutor is not only to boost acedemic performance, but also to help the student get to a spot where my sessions are no longer necessary, to where they can take the intiative themself. By tailoring my sessions to the student, they would have a greater idea of how to apply themself to new challenges they may face, and achieve the goals they have the potential to achieve.
