I find teaching English as it’s learned by all native speakers is the most productive and engaging way to approach the language. Exposure to films, poetry, news articles, scientific reviews etc. are all not only great ways to become familiar but to experience how language grows and changes as the world around it does. Working with students from all sorts of backgrounds, especially those from my charity supporting Ukrainians, I find that actively partaking in a language, especially speaking, and overcoming the frustrations of not quite knowing the right word, you come to have a much more thoughtful understanding of how the words interact with one another. Finding metaphors and idioms to explain what you don’t know the word for are the most valuable ways to not only learn English but to carry with you your own identity.
