Regardless of the level I am teaching (beginner or advanced) my lessons usually focus on one specific aspect (for example, we might look at subject-verb agreement). This approach is helpful both to me and my students.
It is helpful to my students because it largely prevents them from becoming overwhelmed by too much information. English - like any language - has all kinds of rules and exceptions to those rules and it can be confusing if it is not approached systematically.
This approach is also helpful for ME because by focusing on one specific task, I am able to better determine how much progress students are making and whether we need to spend more or less time on that task.

I usually present the general rule or concept and then use lots of practical examples to show how the rule or concept works in the "real world".

My students then do lots of repetition of the examples to help engrain the rule or concept. Along the way, I explain how those examples are following the rule or concept. Then, I usually have my students make up their own, novel examples. I then give them feedback and we go back to the rule or concept that should now be a little bit more familiar to them.

This is just one example and it's fairly vague, but to sum up, my lessons often look like this:

1. Presentation
2. Examples
3. Practice
4. Creation
5. Formal Feedback

Like I said, this is a very general idea and I am constantly giving feedback at almost every stage.
