My method has been simple. I would talk to them about their favourite things and use it in calculations. For example -for a girl obsessed with her pencil bag, I would use that as the parameter. as her focus grows stronger she tries harder to solve the maths problem. It has always been a pleasant experience when the children start feeling confident with the subject.
