I mainly rely on empathy to boost students' self-confidence, then work with them to build up their understanding of the material, help students be able to imagine processes and phenomena, taking the format of a moderately-paced informal conversation in order to take the tension out of learning. This worked for me previously when I was working as a Physics Tutor at Fleet Tutors.
