Most sessions follow the same pattern: a short explanation of the concept, then straight into questions. Long walkthroughs where the tutor does all the talking rarely work. You learn where you actually stand by attempting problems yourself, and that's where the real progress happens. I keep explanations concise and adjust based on how you're responding rather than sticking to a fixed script.
I've helped classmates through topics they were stuck on, and the thing that tends to make the difference is patience and being able to explain the same idea a few different ways until it clicks. I'm an Engineering student at the University of Surrey, currently on placement at Jaguar Land Rover, and achieved an A in A-Level Maths. The subject knowledge is there, but the focus in every session is always on the student and making sure they leave with more confidence than they came in with.
Past papers also play a big part in lessons, especially closer to exams. They're the most honest way to prepare because the style, the wording, and the time pressure are all exactly what you'll face on the day. Going through them together means mistakes become learning points rather than just lost marks, and that shift in mindset can make a real difference.
