I have tutored for a very long time now.

The first thing I follow when I take on a new student is: I talk to them openly to learn their level of knowledge and understanding on the given subjects. That helps me to understand their needs, and I can then determine the speed, ways and approach of my delivery.

I also make sure the lesson is not boring, specially for young children. Besides, for older students I like to use real worlds examples, which helps them to understand technical subjects better.
Finally, I track their progress through regular homework, instant quizzes and even a planned/unplanned (depending on the student) exams sometimes.
Most importantly, I try to make sure they feel comfortable to talk to me and not feel pressured or embarrassed to ask me questions. I encourage them to never be scared of me and ask me as many questions, as many times they need to.
I make sure they understand that, they don’t have to hide any of their shortcomings from me. I’m there to help them, not to judge them, so they have nothing to worry!

I understand that all students are different and they all learn at a different speed and ways. So it’s very important that you understand them first, then only you can accommodate them accordingly. I believe it’s crucial to be on the same page as your student, while tutoring.
