I have been teaching online for the past 4 years and I have come across students of divers cultures and at various learning levels which is something I cherish so much. One teaching skills that has helped me deliver my lessons to the younger learners irrespective of their diverse culture is the effective use of Total Physical Responses (TPR) and props, as it captures their attention as well as manages their little concentration level thereby producing positive results in their learning journey.
I also take breaks twice, within a class of 30 minutes to play kids friendly puzzles and games that involves spotting differences in pictures. This keeps them so excited especially when they get it all right.
For the Adults that are beginners, I find out their areas of interest in life and use examples that covers those areas as we navigate through our lessons, at least at the early stage. I prefer an interactive classroom and as such, I give them room to practice what I teach as they get the opportunity to be more conversant with the use of such lessons.
However, my teaching skills covers writing, reading, pronunciation and speaking. I prepare slides based on the areas of ESL my student is interested in improving on. I Understanding the challenges involved in learning a new language especially as an adult and this makes me very patient with adults because it gives me great excitement to watch them achieve their goals.
