In the first lesson, we’ll start with a brief conversation about what the student hopes to achieve through tutoring and, whether there are any specific topics they’d like to start off with.

As mentioned, my top priority is ensuring a solid understanding of fundamental concepts and logic behind them which, unfortunately, are often overlooked in school. Lessons would typically involve a mix of explanation and problem-solving. When giving student a task I would ask them to talk through their thought process as they solve it. This helps me identify any misconceptions that may be preventing them from reaching the correct solution. Often, most of the reasoning is sound, but it is just small details can significantly affect the final answer.
When that happens, I first provide examples where the same logic doesn’t hold, then give the student time to figure out why. This ties into one of the key skills I aim to develop in students: critical thinking. It is certainly a vital ability in both maths and everyday life. One aspect of critical thinking is recognising errors in your own reasoning - a skill that becomes especially useful when proofreading your work in the final minutes of an exam.
After that, I’ll offer a clear explanation of why the correct logic works and then reinforce the concept with a few additional problems that rely on the same idea.

If the student’s goal is to go beyond the school curriculum - particularly through the olympiad route (though there are others!), I would also give an overview of the main UK maths competitions, how they’re structured and marked.
