Learning a new language can often seem like a daunting task, but it won’t be if one has fun while learning it. So in my classes, I’ll make sure that my students enjoy the learning process. One of the ways to do that is through watching movies. Movies, bring with them, a representation of culture. This is also what helped me as a child to grow accustomed to the English language. Learning about new cultures, about the different habits of people, can be made easier through watching movies. And the way the characters speak and the words they use, is something we can add to our own repertoire.
Besides that, I also believe that reading is the most important activity and one which genuinely helps to improve one’s ability in any language. If students are not familiar with English, then they can always start small with children’s books, which are of the beginner level. After reading, I’ll have discussions with my students about the book that they read. This is to improve their ability to communicate. Communication is perhaps one of the most difficult tasks to manage in any language. But the key is to always practice and to not shy away from making mistakes.
Another aspect of communication is writing, writing one’s thoughts or ideas, is another way through which language can be improved. So, sometimes after watching a movie, or reading a book, I’ll ask my students to write what they felt about it, or about things which could have been better. In this way, all the four essentials; reading, writing, listening and speaking, will be practiced in my classes.
