In my over ten years of teaching experience, the most effectively approach I realised is that students learn effectively when lessons are context-based, something they can always relate to - without undermining the syllabus' scheme of work.
With external exam-based syllabi, like IGCSE/A Level Psychology, it is very important that the syllabus' contents become the utmost priority. In this case, although concepts are made easy by giving them a series of contextualisations and examples, practice questions from the past-papers as their main source of assessment is always essential (which means, nothing is added that would just waste their time and energy). That's why, my materials (slides, etc.) are always having past paper questions along with the guidelines and sample answers on how to ace their examinations. My materials are also revision-ready, whcih I always share with my students beforehand. I do love doing scaffolding too and give a series of valuable feedbacks, until the expectation is met.
Students will always be at the centre of the learning process; it is my top priority to have them achieved their learning need when hiring me as their private tutor.
