Since my university days, I have been rendering tutoring sessions. I start from where my students at to understand where should we jumpstart. The tutorial sessions will be filled with explicit instruction where I will be discussing the key concepts. This will be followed by dissecting the equations (Physics) so as the student will understand what are the components of the starting equation, how to derive a new equation, and why a new equation needs to be utilized in order to solve the given problem. The student will also be given tips on how to solve a world problem using a step-by-step guide: (1) Read and analyze the problem; (2) State/list/write what are the given values/quantities in the problem with their corresponding units; (3) Identify what is/are being asked or what is/are to be solved in the problem; (4) Select or derive the best formula (equation) to use in solving the problem; (4) Solve the problem using the identified (selected) formula; (5) Check the final answer if it contains the correct unit and if it is a logical answer; and (6) Provide a simple justification (argumentation) about the final answer. This is like the conclusion.
If the session time will permit, the student will be given a problem to solve as an independent practice but I will still be available for consult every step of the way until the student finishes solving the problem. The student will always be given full support during the independent practice and is given the freedom to ask questions or help.
