Community and Art go hand in hand, for we cannot have creation without collaboration. From the influence of differing cultures in the artistic and social world we live in to the minute act of giving a child their first pencil. These foundations of ‘what makes us human’ are what drives me towards this role, to actively engage with how a nurturing learning environment fosters community and creativity within young people. My BA in History of Art began this journey for me and established a theoretical framework needed to examine artistic practices. It was then my post-graduate career as an art teacher that offered a space to apply my knowledge practically and hone my passion, which is ultimately using art as a means to build bridges and open up a dialogue with young people in my care. It was the time spent working in these roles where I explored art as a tool to engage my students, building trust and connection through the means of creativity.

At the beginning of my time working as a teaching assistant, any mistake my one-to-one made in their drawing would trigger a violent response, but as we spent more time making art together, they would simply pick up a rubber and try again. Working with young people who are slow to trust, struggle to communicate and act volatile as a result has taught me to use art as a way to work through these challenges, a means to impart valuable life skills such as patience, resilience and perseverance. It is in a role like art tutor where I feel I could most effectively apply my knowledge and experience of art making, session planning, and delivery to my experiences of being in the classroom and working with young people in a hands-on way.

In addition to this hands on experience, I have a deep and extensive knowledge in a variety of artistic mediums, research methods and current marking specifications. With this knowledge, I feel confident in my ability to help guide and improve your art coursework and research.
