With my previous students I have always preferred to orientate my lessons around past exam papers. As we know, most mathematics courses are quite formulaic, so having a thorough and deep grasp on the past paper questions gives students the best possible chance of achieving the top grades in their GCSEs. Preceding any attempt to answer exam questions, however, I like to run through the basic content of the particular topic we are focussing on, ensuring the student is capable of understanding the most basic concepts at play. Once we have mastered this together, we will begin to answer the exam questions (first together, before letting the student free to answer independently) on the topic in question. These exam questions will be supplemented by further example questions. At the end of some lessons, I like to get the student to summarise the concepts to me, thereby allowing me to gauge how much of a grasp they have on the theory. We can in later lessons return to these concepts, strengthening and consolidating the students mastery of the topic. In my past experience, my student and I have developed a good relationship. I have come to know their strengths and weaknesses, and thus I have been able to tailor my style of teaching and content focus to their specific needs.
