What to expect from our lessons

University geography can feel overwhelming, but my sessions are designed to be a collaborative space where complex ideas click. I don’t believe in passive listening or reading off slides. Instead, our lessons are built around active, engaging discussion where we tackle theories together.

A typical session is entirely tailored to what you need that week. We might break down a tricky conceptual framework, map out the structure for an upcoming essay, or look at how to approach your dissertation methodology. I like to keep things highly dynamic, using shared digital workspaces, diagrams, and real-world examples to bring abstract concepts to life.

Real-world insights, not just textbooks

One of the unique things I bring to our lessons is my international experience. Having lived and worked in Mexico, I’ve been on the ground researching and working with major global issues firsthand—including rapid urbanisation, migration, borders, and sustainability.

Instead of just recycling standard textbook case studies, I bring these live examples into our discussions. This gives you a fresh, global perspective that helps you critique mainstream theories, look beyond the standard reading list, and develop the sharp, independent thinking that is so valuable at university level.

My experience and approach

I have taught students across various academic institutions in both the UK and Mexico, so I’m well-acquainted with the high expectations and pressures of degree-level geography. I know how stressful it can be to face a blank page on a major assignment or feel quiet in a seminar group.

My ultimate goal is to give you a supportive, low-pressure environment where you can test out ideas, build your academic confidence, and get the practical tools you need to take your work to the next level.

I would highly recommend working with Ailsa Winton. From our very first meeting, I knew I was in the right hands. I didn’t know what to expect, but that initial conversation gave me great confidence. She listened carefully to my dissertation idea and, after just a brief description, could already tell whether it made sense. Throughout the process, I received constant support. While writing the literature review, she guided me on direction and gave precise, constructive feedback on what was missing. Even when I faced delays, she remained patient and understanding. Her feedback was always motivating and helped me see my progress. Ailsa gave me a genuine sense of security. She was attentive, made sure I knew what to do next. She is one of the most empathetic people I’ve met and an exceptional professional. Every comment she made was insightful and helped me improve my work. Working with her was a pleasure, and I’m deeply grateful. I sincerely recommend her!
