Hello, I am Dr Adnan Shamaoon, a professional mathematics tutor with a PhD in Mathematics from Northumbria University and over ten years of teaching and tutoring experience at every level from GCSE through to university degree.
What my lessons are like
Every lesson starts with you. Before I teach anything, I spend a few minutes finding out exactly where you are with the topic, what you already understand, and where the difficulty is. I do not reteach everything from scratch if you do not need it. I go straight to the specific point where understanding breaks down and work from there.
I explain mathematics in plain, clear language first, before introducing formal notation or algebraic steps. Once the underlying idea makes sense, the notation becomes easy to follow rather than something to memorise blindly. I use diagrams, worked examples, and real-world applications wherever they help, and I adjust my explanations until I find the approach that works for you specifically.
By the end of each session I make sure you can solve problems independently, not just follow along when I do them. I set targeted practice between sessions and provide detailed feedback so the learning continues after we finish.
Who I work with
I have worked with students at every level and every starting point. GCSE students preparing for examinations. A-Level students tackling calculus, statistics, and mechanics for the first time. University students working through real analysis, linear algebra, differential equations, and probability. Students who are confident and want to push further. Students who have repeatedly struggled or lost confidence in mathematics entirely.
I particularly enjoy working with students who think they are simply not a maths person. In my experience, that is almost never true. It usually means they encountered a gap in understanding at some point that was never properly addressed, and everything since has built on shaky foundations. Finding that gap and filling it properly changes everything.
My experience
I taught four undergraduate mathematics modules independently at Northumbria University for three years, receiving a 9.5 out of 10 student evaluation rating with 100% positive feedback from all my students. I also taught mathematics and physics at secondary school level in Pakistan and spent six years as a private mathematics tutor working one-to-one with students online and in person across a wide range of levels and backgrounds. I hold a Certificate of Teaching accredited against the UK Professional Standards Framework and I am an Associate Member of the London Mathematical Society.
Practicalities
I offer both online sessions via video call and in-person sessions across the UK. I am available for flexible hours including evenings and weekends. I am fluent in English and Urdu. Sessions are tailored to your level, your goals, and your schedule.
If you are not sure whether I am the right tutor for you, just get in touch and we can have a brief conversation about what you need. I am happy to answer any questions before we book a first session.
