I have 20 years of experience as an Electrical Engineer working in various settings across industrial, commercial, and domestic workplaces.
I have also worked alongside experienced engineers who have given me insight into the world of mechanical engineering, and also specialized areas including control systems, instrumentation, fire systems, and lastly domestic electricians.
I have also had the chance to work as an Assessor for a training company which are providing apprenticeship opportunities to the next generation of engineers and for people who want to further their learning or even retrain in a different subject. I have worked with many young people to understand not just the basics of engineering but also the more complex subjects.
I structure my lessons on gaining an understanding of what is trying to be achieved from students and finding out what avenues have already been explored so that I can present another possible avenue that they could take in finding the correct answers. I have a personal quote of 'There is always a different way to do something', meaning that you don't have to run in a straight line to find the back of the net.
By doing this, it gets you to think outside the box on working out possible solutions to whatever problems you are facing. Another tip I have used is guiding students and colleagues to take a step back for 10seconds before getting stuck into a task, so that they are aware of what exactly is needed, and this minimises the time that is lost initially and prevents the need for having to do something again because there has been a mistake.
