My lessons would usually begin with a review of the theory of the topic so that the students can clarify any doubts on theory. After that I start with a series of basic exercises to test application of the theory. Here I make a note of the mistakes being made (if any) and go back to theory if needed to demonstrate the correct application of the theory towards the basic exercises. I repeat the loop of basic exercises and theory revision until the understanding is clear and the basic exercises have been executed without a mistake. Within this stage I will also introduce my own questions and problems to help the student(s) further clarify for themselves whether the student(s) is (are) on the right track.
The next phase is to try and do more complicated applications or examples. This is done in order for the student to demonstrate the grasp of the topic and to demonstrate whether the student is able to apply the theory in situations that are more realistic and closer to every day life (or real world) applications. At this competing theory and tools may also be discussed.
After the above mentioned two phases, I will try and link what has been learnt to other topics of the subject so that (a) the student can appreciate how this specific topic fits in with other relevant topics and (b) be able to choose when to apply a specific tool in a specific situation in the right manner. I conclude by inviting questions and clarifications on what has been covered.
