Whether you are just getting started or looking to improve, I believe deepening your theoretical knowledge helps music playing, writing, and listening much more approachable, accessible and ultimately, fun.
Before getting stuck in I find it useful to chat with students to work out what methods and goals would work best for them. For instance, a student looking to learn to read music, or someone studying for a music theory exam, might like to meet weekly and follow a structured teaching plan with clear goals. Other students, like those working on their composition, analysis, or arrangement skills may prefer a more flexible approach. While I am new to formal teaching, I have built up a lot of experience helping friends and family of a range of ages and experience levels with their music theory and have loved seeing their progress.
My musical knowledge and experience is very wide ranging, from classical choral singing to contemporary composition and sound art. Before studying Music at university, I learnt to play the piano, sang in both a chamber choir and contemporary choir, and passed the ABRSM Grade 5 Theory exam with Distinction. During my studies at the University of Glasgow, I won prizes for highest grade point average (2018) and best individual assessed work (2022) and studied sonic art, notation, arrangement, composition, and historical and modern theory before graduating in December 2022 with first class honours. I am currently composing for a short film and singing as part of the Glasgow School of Art choir. This means I am very excited about, and adaptable to, students' personal areas of focus.
I would love to talk more with anyone interested in getting started with, or improving, their music theory!
