I begin by preparing everything in advance and clarify the learning objectives, review any previous work, and organise all teaching materials for easy access. I have plans for backup activities in case there is a last minute change of plans. At the start of the lesson i spend a few minutes, just 2-5, learning about the child’s interests so i can use it in further lessons to engage them more fully, keeping in mind a child’s small attention span. I introduce content gradually and wont move on until they have fully understood and will continue helping them until they do. For slightly more complex topics, I break them down into smaller sections that will build into the bigger picture and make the child understand a topic of higher intelligence required much more easier. I will make sure to ask questions or encouraging the child to explain what they’ve learned to reinforce their understanding of the topic. To wrap it up I will summarise key points, praise their efforts, assign a small homework task which shouldn’t be longer than 15 minutes and the confirmation of our next session. I would also review their favourite moments in the lesson, asking what they had enjoyed the most or found surprising to help with teaching them in further lessons, knowing what aspects of the lesson they liked or disliked. I would probably ask a question about what we would next go over to see how much base knowledge the child has. I will affirm them and their progress and gently hand them off with enthusiasm towards the next session.
