Hello everyone. I'd like to start giving private lessons, but I don't know how much to charge. What do you think is the best rate to start with?

Hi Miranda! There is no one single answer to this question, as it depends on your subject, experience and what people are willing to pay. A good rule I like to use is to set the rate where I am happy to do the job. You can get an idea of what to charge by looking at what tutors in your area are charging for your subjects, or what tutoring websites charge.

It should not be fixed one but according to the financial contition of students so that every one have the equal opportunity to study without any limitations.

The "best" hourly rate for tutoring depends on various factors, including your qualifications, experience, location, subject, and the level of education you're tutoring.

There is absolutely no single answer to this question as it really depends on a lot of factors like: your level of expertise, the subject matter, the local market rates, and the target audience. Typically, rates can range from £10 to £50 per hour, depending on these variables. If you're just starting out, it may be wise to set a competitive rate on the lower end to attract initial clients and build your reputation. As you gain experience and positive feedback, you can gradually increase your rates. Ultimately, the best rate is one that reflects your qualifications and the value you provide while remaining attractive to potential students.

The best rate for private lessons depends on your experience, subject expertise, and location. Research local rates or check platforms like Wyzant or Preply for similar services. As a beginner, consider starting slightly below market rates (e.g., $20–$30/hour) to attract clients, then gradually increase as you gain experience and positive reviews.

Hi Miranda, Usually the bae rate is £20. This is affordable for one hour of tutoring and once students can advocate for your services and leave reviews, you can start to charge upwards of this range between £20-£40. I wouldn't go any higher. Tutoring of students at higher education I would charge more for. Hope this helps

Hi Miranda as a number of other Tutors have already said it depends on a number of factors. However, as you are starting out afresh you can pitch your price in line with your age, qualifications and experience. If you pitch too high people will say you don't have the experience to warrant the high price. If you pitch too low, customers may not feel you are worth hiring. Personally I will vary the price to reflect my needs and the clients ability to pay. Sometimes you have to lower prices to allow people to afford lessons. As your client portfolio increases you can increase your prices for new clients and then lower it as and when required for new clients. I charge low at the beginning of the academic year and in the summer holidays for new clients and then slowly raise prices toward the middle of the year etc.. I hope you find my answer useful, feel free to get in touch through my inbox if you need more help. Best Regards..
