Advert description
Lively, imaginative learning, step by step! I have a Double First in English Language and Literature from Oxford University. Qualified Teacher Status. Over 30 years' teaching experience. Annually updated, Enhanced DBS (Disclosure & Barring) Certificate. My creative, imaginative teaching has helped countless students fulfil their potential. I don't just teach to the test. I boost creativity, skills and knowledge for the future, far beyond the exam hall!
I teach Year 7 up to and including GCSE. I find teaching amazing because every student has their own unique way of looking at the world. My teaching works best with those who are already working hard and just need some extra help and inspiration. I am particularly good with those who like reading but perhaps find school English lessons a bit tedious and exam-obsessed. You can get top grades and also enjoy this incredible subject! In fact, that’s the best way to fulfil your potential.
Teaching Experience
My teaching experience includes working full-time as a secondary-school English teacher and as an English tutor both in the UK and abroad. I create my own teaching materials, using my own drawings and cartoons to explain ideas. My visuals are clear, fun and memorable. I share my teaching materials on the TES Resources platform:-downloads so far! I give clear, encouraging feedback, colour-coded: green for good, red for wrong, purple for next steps!
For nine years I wrote for the TES as an educational journalist. This has been invaluable preparation for teaching the non-fiction part of the GCSE course. For thirty years I have also written and performed my own songs. This has been excellent experience for the creative writing part of the GCSE course.
Confidence is fundamental to learning anything. So I focus on boosting confidence with specific, honest praise. Enjoyable, rewarding work, well suited to the student's interests, makes progress come naturally. At the same time, tuition is a two-way street: if a student is not putting in the effort, tuition doesn't help. My teaching style helps those who are already trying their best but need some extra inspiration and a boost of confidence.
Helping students to enjoy using words to communicate and to explore their own imaginations is a real joy. I know what examiners want, and I like to find creative, imaginative ways to help students provide it.
