There are many things to consider if you want to become a maths tutor, but one of the first things is how much you should charge for giving maths lessons. We know that it is not an easy task to decide this, especially if it is the first time you are giving private tuition, which is why we´ve created this guide to help you.

How much does a maths class cost?

Putting a price on any kind of subject is complicated and there are factors that you always have to take into account. But maths classes have students of all ages and levels, so it has different nuances.

Average tuition price according to level

Level

Average price

Infant and primary school

£8-10 per hour

Secondary school

£10-15 per hour

GCSEs and A-Levels

£15-25 per hour

University

£20-30 per hour

The price of a maths class is set, above all, on the basis of the preparation that it requires for the maths tutor. For this reason, infant or primary school classes are usually cheaper, since they require effort during the class, but the previous knowledge is at a lower level.

However, this should not always be taken literally. There are classes with primary school pupils that can be quite complicated and require a lot of pedagogical work. In these cases, classes may be more expensive, but they should also be taught by experts in children´s or special education.

At GCSE level, A-Level or university level, what is valued is the amount of knowledge that the tutor has. Consequently, a maths lesson for a university student is more expensive. In addition, it is necessary to take into account your own qualifications and experience. If you are trained in maths at university level and you have a teaching qualification for example, you could charge a higher fee for your private lessons.

How to set a price for maths tuition?

As we have already seen, there are many factors that influence the price of a maths class. In the end it all depends on how much you value your work and how much your student values it. But if you are at a loss, there are a number of things you can consider to find out if your maths lessons are of high value:

  • Training. The knowledge that a maths tutor has is fundamental. They have to be able to resolve all doubts on the spot in order to make progress. For this reason, education is key for this type of tutor.
  • Methodology. There are tutors with a great deal of training who are not capable of transmitting their knowledge, and others who, with the little they know, know how to share their knowledge very well. The important thing is to meet objectives and if you have a teaching method that works, your classes will be very valuable.
  • The level of the student. As we have already seen in the previous table, the level of the student is very important in determining the price of classes. The higher the level and the more specialised the required knowledge to teach, the more expensive the classes should be.
  • The objective of the classes. There are some students who only want to pass an exam and others who want to get excellent marks for the whole course. This is a factor to take into account when setting the price.
  • Competition. There are usually a lot of maths tutors as it´s a high demand subject. If there are many tutors also offering private maths lessons but at a lower price point, you may have to consider lowering the prices of your classes a little in order to compete. However, it is always best to try and differentiate yourself in another way and offer something that no other tutor can in order to make your lessons more valuable.
  • Maths resources. In maths classes you need worksheets and various exercises in order to practise maths problems. If you are a tutor with a lot of different resources, beyond what a school can offer, it will be valued.
  • Commitment and dedication. There are maths tutors who give almost exclusive attention to their students and are available to them almost around the clock. This is not an obligation, but it should be something that, if it is offered, is highly valued when it comes to pricing a class.
