Advert description
In a long teaching career with QTS, I have spent twenty-two years as Head of Mathematics in five schools and tutored many pupils in their home.
Typical lessons last an hour and are split into the customary starter, main and plenary. A discussion on progress is always given to parents with possible tasks to complete later.
I have been fortunate to work with a range of age groups from KS1 to IGCSE. I particularly love using and applying mathematical ideas that have an investigative approach and involve an element of creativity. I understand that maths can be a challenging subject, but aim to make the learning process practical, relevant and fun.
I know, through my own experiences at school and in life, it is important to foster confidence and inspire children to achieve.
Maths is not an easy subject to understand, so it is important for pupils to be shown the reasoning behind the methods employed to reach solutions - knowing "why" and "how" are essential to positive outcomes, as well as having a range of approaches for different learners.
I have a degree, and since 1976 I have been a member of the Mathematical Association. I now write articles for one of their magazines. I am also a member of the committee for the Primary Maths Challenge in the UK. I enjoy teaching and believe I have a good sense of humour and patience.
