Throughout high school and university, I have worked as a tutor and teaching assistant in maths and economics courses. I believe that the focus should be on the student and what they find interesting/challenging so no lesson would be exactly the same. I prefer to start with examples (particularly pulling from homework or class examples) and then explain concepts from there. I find that particularly helpful when it comes to learning the basics of economic theory, where you are combining multiple problem-solving techniques together. As a current debate mentor in primary and secondary schools, my students will tell you that I am extremely personable and am likely to chat in between questions and assignments. For the teaching portions, I know how hard it is to focus after a long day or week of schooling so I would typically hold sessions that are 45 minutes to an hour. However, duration is flexible based on need.
